Eligibility

Admissions

Students with any level of Chinese language proficiency (including students who have not yet started studying Chinese) may apply to the UO Chinese Flagship Program. Students must demonstrate a commitment to accelerated Chinese language study while pursuing any major.

We encourage students to contact us at any point during the admission process. We are happy to coordinate campus visits for those who wish to personally travel to Eugene and meet with faculty, students, and staff while exploring the university.

Eligibility

  • Academic Excellence: Students must demonstrate academic excellence, typically assessed as a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Students with lower GPA levels will be considered, but letters of recommendations and essays must demonstrate students’ commitment to academic success.

  • Passion for Learning: Students must demonstrate a passion for studying Chinese language and culture.

  • Commitment to Program: Students must demonstrate a commitment to enroll in Chinese courses each term during their academic career, participate in Flagship events, and complete a yearlong study abroad experience in China or Taiwan.

Application Process

DEADLINE: Priority application deadline each year is January 31. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. There is no Flagship application fee.

 The online application includes:

  • Individual information: Contact information, demographic and academic information, student activities, and work and volunteer experience
  • Statement of purpose (written in English): A written essay  describing students’ activities that have helped them develop their current Chinese skills, their academic plans, and how the Flagship Program can help them achieve their career goals.
  • Chinese topic (written in Chinese):  A written essay discussing a local, national, or international issue related to China or Chinese culture and its impact on the applicant OR an experience, achievement, or risk that they have taken and its impact. Students at beginner levels of Chinese are encouraged to use whatever Chinese words or phrases they are able to, and complete the essay in English.
  • Teacher recommendations (x2): Students should invite two teachers or other leaders to provide recommendations. An email request will be automatically sent to the recommenders when the application is submitted.

After students submit their application: Students may be contacted to schedule an oral proficiency interview. The purpose of the interview is to further assess students’ incoming language proficiency so that we can best place students in the language course that matches strengths and areas for improvement.
