In March 2024, the University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program, alongside University of Washington, University of Hawaii, San Francisco State University, and BYU, was informed by the National Security Education Program that operational funding for the 2024-28 grant cycle will be discontinued due to congressional budget cuts. Despite these challenges, our program will continue supporting students who study abroad during Summer 2024 and AY2024-25 as well as provide financial aid to the incoming cohort. We are immensely proud of our students, whose dedication and teamwork are the foundation of our community. The UO Chinese Flagship Banzhang student leadership committee will continue its activities under the Associate Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO), actively engaging the broader Chinese learning community and offering cultural immersion opportunities to all interested students.

University of Oregon Flagship

The University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program is a part of The Language Flagship, a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages through curricular innovation and intensive study abroad.

Since 2005, the University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program has provided students with holistic academic advising and scholarship support to develop professional-level proficiency in Chinese while studying any academic major of their choice. Through our program, students become global professionals ready to change the world.

The program is housed in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature (EALL). In order to fully support our students, we work closely with other offices and centers on campus including GEO Division of Global Engagement, the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, UO Housing, and UO Academic Advising.

The Language Flagship

The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in languages critical to American competitiveness and security. Language Flagship offers programs in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

The Oregon Flagship Program is sponsored by The Language Flagship, a public/private partnership sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) of the Department of Defense and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
